Welcome, Jacob Ivan Vandiver born February 7, 2011



My dear friends and ministry leaders of Hope & Life, Ukraine. Anya & Richard traveled to Hungary last week to wait for little Jacob to be born.  He is a very international baby as his mom is Ukrainian, his dad is an American from Texas and he was born yesterday in Hungary.  Anya had some special considerations which made having the birth in Hungary a much better option. She also has an American passport so it was easy for them to cross into Hungary.  The new family will be moving in with me (YEAH!!!!) probably by the end of the week.  Then all the paperwork needs to get resolved. It is also much easier to travel to the embassy in Budapest from here than if they had to travel to Kiev from Uzhghorod.  Little Jacob will need his US passport to travel over the border with mom and dad.  Please join us in prayer for a quick recovery for Anya and a strengthening for Jacob as he was born a little early and a little underweight.  A friend here had a Word that Jacob would have a peaceful birth (and he did!) and be a messenger of peace. He is also, a very peaceful baby, in fact a little more interested in sleeping than eating so you could pray about that,too. Anya and Richard are almost overwhelmed with the care they are getting and the interest of people in their situation. And Jilly, grandma is looking forward to that little guy being here!!

I like the fact that if you put on your 'Jilly grandma' hat you are a grandma, if you put it on the missionary one, you are a missionary and if you put it on the church leader one, you're that...:) You carry a variety inside of you.Puszi,Barka

How amazing is our Wonderful God to bring two people from opposite ends of the Earth together in love and produce such a beautiful baby. God is so Awesome.

February 4,5 Alpha Holy Spirit Retreat Hollókö, Hungary

Last Friday I traveled to Hollókö, Hungary to meet with my Hungarian friend. Nora. Nora is leading her second Alpha Course in her village. From there we traveled to another village for an overnight retreat.  10 ladies and some children attended. The Holy Spirit was so faithful to demonstrate Himself in our midst giving encouraging words as we prayed together,  refilling some and baptizing some for the first time.  It was a very precious time. If God lays it on your heart please be praying for these ladies. The 10 ladies were from 6 different villages in Nograd county (and me,too). In none of the villages are living churches but most of these ladies are "keys" to living prayer groups. Nora has been working in one of the villages and is now in the process of setting up a small retreat center. After our weekend she took me there to pray. We had a really good night last night - kind of...

My brother Jack and his wife Debby just arrived back from Florida where Jack was trying to hide out from having to face a "big" birthday. So my sister Kathi and I decorated his house to welcome him home - and left him a card that said "You can run, but you can't hide! :-). Some of you know Jack by his more common name "No rules for kids, Uncle Jack". Well, mom really enjoyed visiting with Jack and Debby and as a result she stayed up until 10.30. Most nights she can only sleep for about 5 hours tops and even then gets up a number of times. That means I get up with her :-). Night before last that was at 1.30, 4, 6 and 7!! So when this morning I realised I had been able to sleep through the night I was more concerned than relieved. I checked my monitor and yes it was working and finally turned on the light to check and see if mom was ...alive. Do you remember the first night your baby slept all the way through to morning? Chocolate chip cookies

My mom who was a very good cook and baker, was famous for her chocolate chip cookies. Since she can no longer make them I took it upon myself to "try" to perfect the recipe. This is my latest attempt. (Last weeks were enjoyable but not in the running) Two brothers independently rated them at 8.5 out of 10 - 10 of course would be just like moms. This score could even climb to 9 depending on how they taste frozen. Mom often baked at night and would leave "some" out on a plate and the rest hidden in the freezer so they would last longer. Of course we figured that out pretty quickly and now prefer them frozen. You may like yours golden and crispy but there is a secret ingredient in these and a way to bake them that makes them soft and oh so yummy!!
